Ventilation in the restored kindergarten

Kindergartens have been through a lot in the past decades. Many buildings were abandoned and as a consequence, destroyed, while others were rented or sold. However, now the opposite process, the process of restoration, is taking place everywhere. In the following, we will talk about the second breath of one of these kindergartens.

Second Breath

The kindergarten building has not been used for its intended purpose for many years. Previously it was a sanatorium type kindergarten for children with health problems. For a while, the pre-school institution operated a nursery and school, but for the most part, the building was empty and dilapidated. According to the head, in 2012, the local authorities decided to restore the kindergarten, but it went no further than the design work.

Nevertheless, it was possible to start a major renovation of pre-school institution 43 in Cheremushki. The city was helped in this by the German Corporation for International Cooperation GIZ. The Germans, who started the work in January 2018, undertook the bulk of the work. Today the building is unrecognizable (only the walls remain of the old ones). The modern kindergarten stands in stark contrast to the nearby five-story buildings, such a piece of Europe with German standards.

According to Tetiana Onyshchenko, director of the Department of Humanitarian Affairs, the participation of the city consisted in co-financing in the amount of 1 million 152 thousand hryvnias in 2018 for the purchase of bed linen, tableware, installation of a fire alarm system, construction of a solid fuel boiler room. This year, 4 million 332 thousand hryvnias were provided for finishing the work, including landscaping of the territory, additional payment for the boiler room and the purchase of missing equipment. The lion’s share of the work was completed thanks to the finances of the GIZ Corporation. During the renovation, modern materials and construction technologies were used.

Modern Technology

It’s amazing how the building has been transformed, becoming modern and well-designed just for children. The first thing you notice is that all the switches and sockets are raised to a height of 1.80 m to prevent children’s hands from reaching potentially dangerous objects. All the sharp corners at children’s head level are removed. The windows are also designed in such a way that a child can’t reach the open part.

The flooring is linoleum, not just plain linoleum but eco-friendly. Expensive to buy but completely non-toxic for children, as it is made of natural materials. For cleaning (which is important in our city), heating and cooling air in the entire building, the Ventoxx Comfort HRVs are installed instead of harmful to health air conditioners. The bathrooms have new plumbing fixtures and heaters.

The medical block is designed in such a way that it has a separate exit so that sick children do not come into contact with healthy ones. There are also rooms for physiotherapy and therapeutic gymnastics.

In the courtyard, each group of children has its own color canopy, with a wooden floor and a special coating. Closer to the time of opening, there will be a green lawn of eco-grass. Along the perimeter of the kindergarten, special troughs, rectangular pits that would be filled with gravel and sand, then sown with lawn grass, were dug according to new technology. Their purpose is the rapid drainage of natural precipitation from the area.
